Sanborn707 Introduction

by Sanborn707 | Posted in Contributors

johns_big.jpgI am the creative director of Shutterfly and an avid storyteller. My first medium (and probably still my favorite) is video. After school I became a video artist making works for galleries and museums that examined actions and their consequences- little metaphors for change and the effects of time. I got myself into the permanent collection of several museums (like MOMA in New York) and then started making music videos and TV commercials. From there I started creating episodic TV (and getting cancelled a lot) and video games.

My love of interactivity and community eventually landed me at Shutterfly where I realized that the media Shutterfly offers for turning images and text into personal works (cards, books, posters) are perfectly linked to the storytelling aspects of my video art work. I find my personal work concerned more and more about the passage of time, and my ability to refine my views of the past through examination and reflection. My book “a study in time” is a good example of my desire to “zoom in” to details in my life, whether they are simple or heroic, and celebrate what I see. An old friend of mine once said “I choose to cut to the heart of the matter, and the heart of the matter is me”. As I get older I find that I have the answers inside me- but I keep looking for better questions to ask.

I worked with a John Sanborn in B’ham, Ala. While your picture doesn’t look like him, I haven’t seen him in 6 years or so. Did you go to college in Virginia?

Sanborn707-Thank you for all you do and have done for Shutterfly. I have used 5 photo book web sites and Shutterfly is the only one I now recommend to folks. It is easy to use and constantly improving. I love the Gallery concept and the ability to looks at many peoples’ photographs, approaches, stories and uniqueness in approach. I make suggestions to Rachel and she comes back with links that tell me how to do now what I thought would have to be added. Keep it up.

I “found” the world of Storytelling long after I realized that the drama I was putting into my chidlren’s story time was supposed to be something i had to “learn” What a joy to find that it really is a part of some people, as artistic ability are a part of others. I learned the techniques that others were using and put my own style together. I was working on Storytelling as part of a wedding package I was working on when I heard about Shutterfly from a friend who uses the services to help folks with their printing needs. At the time, it seemed like just a place to do pictues and not related to telling. Now i see there are some insightful folks on the site that went beyond supplies for customers. I am glad that Shutterfly has linked the work of pictures with the work of the Teller. Together, it can bring some comfort. The words stay in ear after the sound is gone (like the sounds of the piano after the key is struck–even if you are reading it yourself. In the same way, the pictures can be brought up again and again to refresh the soul and bring a smile or a sigh…
I tell stories every chance i get. A few times we have added their art work to our time as I lead them to fill in the color of the characters’ eyes and the green of the tree…Yes, it is delightfully all inclusive. Sincerely, Adrienne

    Hi John,
I met you years ago in SF through Skip Sweeney and the video art scene. I am curating a show of video dance works and want to show the piece you did with Bill T. Jones, UNTITLED. I only have access to a VHS Copy as does Bill T. I wonder if you have access to a master or digital version? I would be happy to pay for a transfer as necessary. I can tell you more upon your reply.
    Best,
    Douglas Rosenberg
