Murals & More

growwhereyoureplanted.jpgLisaH26’s “ Calvert Street Mural” tells the story of a community art project at Calvert Street Elementary School.  We get to meet the artists, see how they sketch out each drawing before the over 200 painters (teachers, students, parents and community members), and then enjoy the finished project. In addition to the photos, we learn about the reaction of the school and community to the effort.
Matthews_Mom “ My Mother’s Artwork” also features murals her mother has painted, as well as other examples of her artwork that cover home furnishings and whole rooms.  Some of my favorite pages in the book show the mural models next to the photos that were used on pages 8-9. The book is so beautiful in part because of the work done to match or compliment the murals with the backgrounds on each page. This effort really serves to highlight the colors in each work of art.
I know I have a bunch of school artwork brought home at the end of the semester that needs to be photographed and preserved and these books give me some great inspiration for building a portfolio for my budding artists. Post your works of art in Gallery.

Thank your for bringing these two art books to our attention. Both are incredibly inspiring. I love that the mural at Calvert Elementary was a group project. How satisfying and inspiring for everyone who participated. And “My Mother’s Artwork” is full of amazing stuff. You’re right, both of these books make me want to capture my niece and nephew’s drawings in photo books. Or start painging all my furniture with whimsical patterns :)
